This is a great story about a restaurant in Portland Oregon that composts it's leftovers instead of sending them to the landfill. They do this with the help of a city recycling /composting program. We need this everywhere!!
Any thoughts on how to get this happening in NJ?

Poverty is a horrible thing no matter what aspect of life it affects, but just throwing money at it won't completely solve the problem.
When it comes to poverty there are no easy answers. With the US in an economic crisis money and poverty are on everyone's mind. But poverty isn't just about money. People can be poor in many other ways, such as health, spirit, and love.
When it comes to helping others who are suffering we need not look too far. Just look at your own family, friends, and communtiy. There is no better time than now to help those in need. If money is tight for you, as it is for most right now, give your time, love, and energy to others.
Give your time to others who might need someone to help watch their children. Give your love to those whho just need someone who will listen to what they have to say. Truly listen! And give your energy to those around you, especially your family, that need help in even the smallest of ways.
True giving should hurt a little. If you give because you just have too much of something then that is not true giving. Give to others what you yourself would need.
As a mother of two I know that finding time to do formal meditation is pretty much nonexistent. Don't worry meditation isn't all about sitting with legs crossed and eyes closed. It's about focus.
Throughout your day when you find your mind wondering from what you are doing (paperwork, laundry, dishes, DRIVING, etc.) just bring your attention back to your task. This practice of focusing the mind on the present situation IS meditation. This makes everything we do an opportunity to meditate and focus on the now.
When I think of an example to use from my daily life I think of trying to get my kids to laugh and smile. I notice that when I try to get our 4 month old to laugh I am completely focused. I make silly faces and noises just to get a simple little smile, and nothing else matters while I am doing this. Even if my attention does get interrupted I immediately go back to the baby until I finally get that laugh. And once he starts to laugh the joy I feel is indescribable.
Another practice to incorporate throughout your day is focusing on your breath. Just like focusing on a task bring your awareness to your breath at points during the day. Remember meditation is a journey. Don't expect to be a master overnight and don't beat yourself up if you lose focus or forget to do so. The journey is what it is all about. We learn from the practice not the end result.
Bringing thisfocus to your tasks and breath will help you to relax during stressful situations (like driving, especially if you live in NJ) and can help you to experience life to the fullest. This makes every moment an opportunity to meditate, so really you always have time.

On Monday October 6th The Leonard Lopate Show on WNYC interviewed Antonia Juhasz the author of The Tyranny of Oil. Below is the audio clip of that interview, which is very informative on how the oil industry became so large and what changes need to be made to bring it into check. Visit www.wnyc.org for more info.
Click Here to See the Trailer for "Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days"
An excellent documentary about how raw foods can reverse diabetes. As a Type 1 Diabetic I learned a great deal from this documentary and try to implement as much raw food as I can into my diet. Though, it is not always easy. I hope to one day go through this program myself at The Tree of Life Rejuvanation Center. But until then I have this wonderful video and Dr. Gabriel Cousens book There Is a Cure for Diabetes: The Tree of Life 21-Day+Program. If someone you know or love has Diabetes please pass this on. There is no better gift than the gift of life and good health!
" You must be the change you want to see in the world. " -Mahatma Gandhi
As it gets closer to Election Day, and we get even more tired of politics in general, let's think about a smaller picture. ( Politics being the bigger picture here.) Sure there are good and bad to each candidate/party, but really we all have the ability to change the world and make it better, not just the president.
I know it sounds a bit cliche but each individual has the power, it's just whether or not we want to make the effort. We can all help to create world peace, end global warming, and save the economy. It's not only up to the big wigs in politics to do it, it's mainly up to us as individuals. Because when all of us "individuals" come together and decide to change something we work as one greater "individual." That's what team work is all about.
No we don't all have to do exactly the same things or act in the same ways, but if we want to create more peace in the world then we need to create more peace in our own lives and families. How you treat other people always has a major affects on the bigger picture. How you spend your money and teach your children how to spend money affects our economy. If we are greedy then are government and big business will be too. Global warming can be stopped if we all try to do what we as individuals can. We can't all be environmental activists in the bigger picture, but we can be activists in our own homes and help to teach the future generations as well. If we want the war to end then we need to end our own wars. The wars within ourselves, our families, and with people we don't get along with.
So as for the bigger picture of politics vote for whom ever you choose, but remember that bigger picture is made up of us!
